Sixth Plate Ambrotype | Technically this is a very high quality, boldly vivid ambrotype. The fur on the young gent's cap is superbly detailed, and nearly palpable. His brass instrument is interesting and he holds it as though ready to play. The added kick is provided by the photographers card found in the back of the case: the ambrotype artist is "L.T. Sparhawk" and not only does he take ambrotypes, but he deals in "Musical Instruments of all kinds", in West Randolph, Vermont. So, apparently, we behold a happy purchaser of a gleaming brass horn. An interesting footnote to the commercial history ion 19th Century USA: musical instrument sales as an adjunct to the profession of photography. This exceptional sixth plate ambrotype resides in a half case. About 1860. Image #A-06; price on request.
