Sixth Plate Ambrotype | One would be hard-pressed to find a better technical example of a ruby ambrotype: sharp and vivid detail abounds, comparable in its power to a very fine daguerreotype. The gleaming finish on the chair-back is nearly three-dimensional in its visual impact. The gents eyes are tinted blue, as is the tablecloth. Under magnification we learn that he is working man: His hands are stained with grime, which the ultra-sharp ambrotype records with relentless honesty. This American image resides in a full case, and probably dates to the late 1850s. Image #A-07; price on request.
